How Much Does a Smart Home Cost in Australia? A Realistic Guide for Premium Homes

Uncategorized

“So, roughly what does it cost?”

It is the first question in almost every consultation we run, and it deserves a straight answer rather than the usual “it depends”. So here it is: a professionally integrated smart home in Australia generally ranges from around $10,000 for a single-room or starter system to $250,000 and beyond for a fully automated luxury residence. Most of the premium homes we work on in Brisbane land somewhere between $40,000 and $120,000.

That is a wide band, so the rest of this article breaks down exactly what moves the number up or down, where the money actually goes, and how to invest it wisely.

What actually drives the cost

Four factors do most of the work in any smart home quote.

1. The size and layout of the home. More rooms means more lighting circuits, more keypads, more speakers and more cabling. A four-bedroom family home and a sprawling acreage estate are entirely different projects, even with the same feature list.

2. The number of systems being integrated. Lighting only? Lighting plus security plus multi-room audio plus blinds plus climate plus a home cinema? Every additional system adds hardware and programming time, but it also multiplies the value, because integration is where the magic happens.

3. The platform and hardware tier. A Control4 system typically costs less than an equivalent Crestron Home system. Within each platform, choices like architectural speakers versus premium in-ceiling audio, or standard keypads versus designer finishes, shift the number meaningfully.

4. New build versus retrofit. Automating during construction is almost always more cost-effective. Cabling is cheaper to run, nothing needs to be patched or repainted, and the network can be designed into the fabric of the home. Retrofits are absolutely achievable, we do them regularly, but allow extra for access and making good.

Realistic price bands

Every home is different, but these bands reflect what we actually see across South East Queensland.

Starter system: $10,000 to $25,000. A single-room cinema, or whole-home control of a couple of systems such as lighting scenes and a video intercom. A brilliant entry point that can be expanded later.

Mid-tier integration: $25,000 to $60,000. Whole-home lighting control, multi-room audio in the main living zones, integrated security and CCTV, video intercom and climate control, all unified under one app and wall keypads. This is the most popular band for quality family homes.

Full luxury integration: $60,000 to $150,000. Everything above, plus motorised blinds and curtains, a dedicated home theatre, pool and outdoor entertainment zones, extensive CCTV coverage and a commercial-grade network throughout. Typically Control4 or entry Crestron Home.

Estate level: $150,000 and beyond. Large residences, guest wings, gyms, wine cellars, gate and grounds automation, bespoke interfaces and Crestron-grade infrastructure designed to run flawlessly for decades.

Treat these as orientation, not a quote. Two homes with the same floor area can land in different bands depending on what the owners want the home to do.

The line items nobody budgets for (but should)

A trustworthy integrator will always include these. A cheap quote often quietly leaves them out.

The network. Every smart home lives or dies on its network. Enterprise-grade Wi-Fi, proper switching and a secure configuration typically represent $5,000 to $20,000 of a project, and it is the best money in the entire budget. A luxury automation system on a consumer router is a luxury car on flat tyres.

Programming and commissioning. Hardware is only half the story. The scenes, schedules, and one-touch behaviours that make the home feel effortless are built in programming hours. This is skilled work and it is where a great integrator earns their fee.

Documentation and support. Your system should come with proper documentation and a support arrangement. Homes change, families change, and technology receives updates. Ongoing support is what keeps a five-year-old system feeling brand new.

Where to spend and where to save

After hundreds of projects, our advice is consistent.

Spend on the invisible things. Network infrastructure, cabling and quality core hardware. These are painful to upgrade later and they determine reliability for the next decade.

Spend on what you touch every day. Lighting control and keypads deliver more daily delight per dollar than almost anything else. You interact with light switches dozens of times a day.

Save by staging. You do not need everything on day one. A well-designed system is built to expand. Cable for the future during construction, then add the theatre, the outdoor zone or the blinds in later stages.

Do not save on installation quality. A discounted install that needs constant call-backs is the most expensive option of all. This industry has a saying: the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten.

Is it worth it?

Our clients tend to answer this within the first month. The value of a properly integrated home is not any single feature. It is the accumulation of small daily moments: the house settling into an evening scene at sunset, the front gate camera appearing on the kitchen touch panel when someone arrives, the entire home securing itself with one touch as you leave, the music following you to the pool.

There is also a practical case. Integrated security protects the property, quality AV and lighting are genuine selling features in the premium market, and a documented, professionally installed system transfers cleanly to a future owner.
